Elon Musk Ditches Tesla-Backed Loans As Part of His Twitter Takeover
Dimitrios KambourisElon Musk will no longer use loans backed by Tesla stock as part of his Twitter takeover, instead adding $6.25 billion of personal funding toward the $44 billion deal, according to a new filing with the SEC submitted on Tuesday.Musk’s original proposal included a $12.5 billion margin loan—with his Tesla shares acting as collateral—a decision that looked increasingly precarious as the electric carmaker’s stock started to tank. He later reduced the loan amount by half before eliminating the remaining balance this week.Tesla shares have plummeted close to 40 percent over the past six months amid a broader tech downturn, including a 25 percent fall-off over the last month alone.Read more at The Daily Beast.

CNN Anchor Confronts Texas Republican: Why Do You Protect Embryos but Not Children?
CNNCNN anchor Alisyn Camerota on Wednesday confronted a Texas Republican lawmaker over inaction on gun violence, directly asking him why the state’s legislature seemingly puts more vigor toward stripping women’s access to abortion than it does in protecting schoolchildren.“What we want to know is what your solution is,” Camerota asked state Rep. James White while standing in front of Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, where 19 students were killed on Tuesday. “We’ve all seen how quickly and creatively Texas—your local legislature—can act when it wants to, say, protect the unborn embryo. Why not act with that alacrity to protect living, breathing 10-year-olds in this school behind me?”Camerota was referencing the state’s restrictive 2021 law, which bans abortions after six weeks of pregnancy and allows private individuals to file civil lawsuits against those who perform or facilitate an abortion procedure.Read more at The Daily Beast.

Lumin’s Men’s Skincare Set is Exactly What You Need to Start Your Anti-Aging Routine
Scouted/The Daily Beast/LuminTaking care of your skin is probably the most important thing you can do to keep wrinkles and crow’s feet away, yet basically, every man I know (including me) doesn’t do. Up until very recently, my definition of taking care of my skin was washing my face with soap and water and calling it a day. After talking to just about anyone with a modicum of care for their face, I learned very quickly that washing your face with soap and water does not count as skincare. I think for a lot of men, this is probably something we are slowly coming to realize, particularly as we start getting older. So, in order to prevent the slow decline of my face and youthful beauty, I tried out the Lumin Skincare Set and I will never go back. Lumin is a skincare brand that focuses on getting men to actually take care of their skin with products tailored for them. The Complete Skincare Gift Set comes with a Charcoal Cleanser, Ultra-Hydrating Moisturizing Balm, Exfoliating Rub, Dark Circle Defense, After-Hours Recovery Oil and Anti-Wrinkle Serum.I start my new routine with the Exfoliating Rub, which will literally begin to ball up once it begins to trap dead skin and open up my pores. This happened embarrassingly quick the first few uses but began making a noticeable difference over time. My skin is smoother and legitimately softer to the touch. Following this, I used the Charcoal Cleanser which is arguably the most vital product in the Lumin product line. The Charcoal Cleanser not only works to repair damaged skin cells and clean away grime, but the product also smells and feels amazing to use. With a very light scent and smooth texture, rubbing down my face with this every day is genuinely my favorite part of getting ready to go to sleep.Read more at The Daily Beast.

Move Over, Dyson—LG’s Air Purifying Fan Is Powerful & Gorgeous
Scouted/The Daily Beast/LG.Now that allergy season is officially upon us, having a solid air purifier is a must. Of course, with eleven pets, I rely on my air purifiers to work their air-cleansing magical powers year-round, but most of the effective air purifiers I’ve found are kind of an eyesore. Dyson is known for their aesthetically-pleasing air purifiers and fans, but there’s a new hybrid model on in the game that not only isn’t downright ugly, but it looks like a piece of art (yes, really.) LG’s PuriCare AeroTower Air Purifying Fan with True HEPA and UVnano is my dream purifier-fan hybrid for a number of reasons—not just its good looks. Engineered with LG’s exclusive UVnano™ LED technology and an advanced True HEPA filter, the AeroTower is not only able to kill 99.9 percent of bacteria on fan blades, but it also eliminates 99.97 percent of fine dust and allergens too. When I tell you that this thing has saved me during this extra evil allergy season, I’m not even exaggerating in the slightest. In fact, when I visited my sister last week, my allergies went haywire thanks to the absence of my beloved AeroTower. The ultra-quiet component fan is equipped with ten different settings (including oscillation settings) to keep you cool and comfortable and three customizable airflow settings: diffused, direct, and wide. Perhaps most importantly, the AeroTower is able to purify the air in rooms of almost any size up to 818 sq. ft. Read more at The Daily Beast.

Stop Denying That Mass Shooters Can Be Mentally Ill
Photo Illustration by Luis G. Rendon/The Daily Beast/GettyI have no idea if Salvador Ramos, the 18-year-old gunman who murdered at least nineteen students and two teachers on Tuesday, suffered from a mental illness. But I know I reject the certainty that Ramos didn’t have such an illness, which many have already expressed. This is perhaps epitomized by Media Matters for America’s Matt Gertz calling mental health talk a “cynical dodge.” This reflexive insistence that mental illness was not at play is wrong, and potentially destructive. In the immediate aftermath of these tragedies, everyone scrambles to take their partisan places. The by-now familiar habit is to rush to discover the shooter’s race and religion, the better to fit the story into a trite political narrative. For example, if the killer is white, then liberals can shout about white supremacy; if Muslim, then conservatives can rant about radical Islam. Ramos, inconveniently for knee-jerk political tribalists, was Hispanic, and thus does not so easily fit into these prefabricated arguments. But when a major national story explodes online, you can be sure that people will quickly find some battlements to man and some culture war to wage. Mental health has quickly become such a battleground—in particular, concerning the certitude held by some over what mental illness supposedly can’t do.Read more at The Daily Beast.

GOP Senators Ask Top Potential Gun Regulator to Reduce Gun Regulations
Drew AngererLess than 24 hours after the deadliest mass shooting at an elementary school in nearly a decade, President Joe Biden’s nominee to lead the government agency responsible for regulating firearms appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee, representing perhaps the administration’s best remaining chance to further its goals on gun control. But the confirmation hearing of Steve Dettelbach to run the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives revealed that even in the shadow of a massacre that claimed the lives of 19 young children and two teachers in Uvalde, Texas, the unified Republican opposition to firearm restrictions that sank the previous nominee has not abated.“You’ve called for every type of gun control,” Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) told Dettelbach at the top of his hearing on Wednesday morning, before requesting that he disavow the actions of gun control groups who “play on the emotions of those whose lives have been ripped apart by a tragic shooting.”Read more at The Daily Beast.
‘The Silent Twins’ Is a Stunning Fantasy About Twin Black Girls Trapped in Their Own World
Cannes Film FestivalAgnieszka Smoczyńska, granted the chance of a far bigger budget for her English debut after two well-received features in her native Poland, throws absolutely everything in her toolkit at The Silent Twins. In this feature relating the true story of the Gibbons twins, June and Jennifer, with Letitia Wright and Tamara Lawrance in the main roles, Smoczyńska chucks in stop-motion animation, a dream sequence featuring synchronized swimmers and Princess Diana lookalikes, a dance sequence, an opening credits sequence read out by two of her actors, songs sung by the cast that tell the story (!), and, on top of this, a relentlessly bustling aesthetic, all upside down cameras, woozy-glassy effects, throbbing colors, stylized decors, and costumes so hyper-designed as to make Wes Anderson blush. It’s to the director’s immense credit that so much of this sheer directorial effort hits home.June and Jennifer Gibbons, whose story is told over the course of about 20 years between the ‘70s and the early ‘90s, were twins who in their early years appeared bound by an extraordinary unspoken connection—very much unspoken, in fact, since the two girls were in the habit of speaking only to each other, in the little bedroom they shared. There, they built up an extraordinary world—a universe of outsider art, in effect—where they wrote stories and poems, collected images, and generally seemed to inhabit an inner sanctum cut away from society. In its early stretches, the girls are played by newcomers Eva-Arianna Baxter and Leah Mondesir-Simmonds with remarkable intensity, introducing us to the disquieting, mysterious bond between the sisters, and subtly delineating the differences between the quieter June and the more outgoing Jennifer. This world is richly depicted (perhaps in part because Marjorie Wallace, on whose book the film is based, acts as a producer here), figuring a supportive family unit with immigrant roots, a series of schools and advisers trying to get through to these strange girls, and, especially, the fantasy land they create together, using beautiful, bristling animation and voice-over from the girls. Smoczyńska’s set director works overtime to create detailed interiors of schools, police stations, the family living room, and the secretive bedroom: the director films these with a real eye for color and composition, making gorgeous use of the pairing of the twins to create evocative tableaux. Seeing the two girls filmed from above, shuffling in lockstep as they walk diagonally through a snowy playground toward the forbidding front door of a new school, is to understand the utter dislocation of these two Black girls in Wales, the sense of awe and otherworldliness that their relationship must have inspired, and the solace that each other’s companionship must have brought.Read more at The Daily Beast.

New Cancer Vaccine Bludgeons a Tumor’s Defenses Better Than Ever
GOMBERT, SIGRIDModern science has a couple of tricks up its sleeve when it comes to fighting cancer. Nearly a century ago, we discovered that our immune systems can recognize and wipe out these abnormal interlopers. We’ve used this knowledge to design drugs that prevent tumors from growing and therapies that help the immune system better fight cancer. We’ve also developed vaccines that prevent certain types of cancers by targeting viruses that mutate healthy cells. However, we’ve been less successful in creating vaccines that target cancer directly. That might drastically change. In a study published Wednesday in the journal Nature, researchers headed by the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston developed a cancer vaccine that prevents a tumor from evading immune cells. The vaccine recruits the immune system’s T cells and natural killer (NK) cells to essentially box in cancer cells, attacking them while also sounding the immune system’s alarm. Early results indicate the vaccine could be the first step toward creating a universal cancer jab potentially used alongside conventional cancer therapies and may prevent patients from relapsing.Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? Photo by EVELYN HOCKSTEIN / POOL / AFPJohnny Depp returned to the stand on Wednesday morning in the ongoing defamation case between the actor and his ex-wife, Amber Heard. In new testimony preceded by a lengthy, animated bench conference out of earshot between lawyers for both parties and Judge Penney Azcarate, Depp was asked about his drug use, his role in helping Heard land a role in Aquaman, and what happened between him and his wife in a violent encounter in Australia that left him with a severed fingertip.Shortly after his ex-girlfriend, supermodel Kate Moss, shot down a rumor that Depp had pushed her down a staircase decades ago, Depp reiterated his previous claims that Heard was abusive and he the real victim. He also seemed to key early on testimony offered by Heard’s sister Whitney Henriquez, who stood out as the first witness to say she saw Depp attack Heard.Depp suggested Henriquez was a victim of Heard, too.Read more at The Daily Beast.

Classroom of Horror: How the Texas Elementary School Shooting Unfolded
Getty/Uvalde CISDAll 19 kids and two teachers killed in the massacre at Texas’ Robb Elementary School were in a single fourth-grade classroom where the shooter had barricaded himself as local cops tried to smash windows to free students, officials said. Tuesday’s horrific incident began when Salvador Ramos, an unemployed and increasingly aggressive 18-year-old who had recently dropped out of high school, shot his grandmother, whom he lived with in a modest bungalow in Uvalde decorated with a religious cross and a Christmas wreath. He then took off in a truck but crashed in a ditch near Robb Elementary, a school of about 600 mostly Latino students who were just two days away from summer vacation, according to school records. Kate Moss Denies Johnny Depp Stairs Rumor in Defamation War With Amber Heard
Photo by Barry King/WireImageOn Wednesday, Kate Moss joined the chaos of the trial pitting Johnny Depp against Amber Heard over allegations of brutal domestic violence and defamation when she was called to the stand via video link by Depp’s team first thing in the morning.Moss quickly—and briefly—denied a rumor about Depp pushing her down stairs that was referred to by Heard during the actress’ own testimony. An ex-girlfriend of Depp’s, the supermodel was called during the actor’s rebuttal of Heard’s countersuit claims against him just before closing arguments and jury deliberations were expected in the case. It’s a turn of events that some legal observers suggested Heard invited by mentioning the ugly rumor from the ’90s couple’s past in her own testimony earlier this month: that Depp had shoved Moss down a stairwell.Read more at The Daily Beast.

German prosecutors say they have handed a dossier of evidence to lawyers of convicted pedophile Christian Brueckner, who is serving time in prison for the rape of a 72-year-old American woman in the village where McCann disappeared, paving the way for new charges. But prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters says the charges are not related to McCann, but to the rape of another woman in the same village, and a string of “exposure incidents” against children while he worked in the resort McCann was snatched from. German law dictates that suspect’s lawyers are given time to review the evidence before any charges are made public.Read more at The Daily Beast.

Boris Johnson Blamed for Lockdown Parties: Vomit on the Floor, Dancing Til 4
Leon NealAfter becoming the first U.K. Prime Minister to be penalized for breaking the law while in office, Boris Johnson was dealt another blow Wednesday with the publication of a long-awaited report into lockdown-breaking gatherings at the heart of the British government. The damning investigation slammed “failures of leadership and judgment” and featured details of wild all-night parties where staff were throwing up and even getting into fights.Senior civil servant Sue Gray was asked to investigate the so-called ‘partygate’ scandal after reports of rule-breaking parties in Whitehall emerged last December. A separate police inquiry into the events saw Johnson fined in April, despite his earlier insistence that no parties had taken place. But Gray’s report reaffirmed that lockdown rules had been broken by 83 people over a series of gatherings, blaming senior leaders for the failings. “Many of these events should not have been allowed to happen,” the report says. “It is also the case that some of the more junior civil servants believed that their involvement in some of these events was permitted given the attendance of senior leaders. The senior leadership at the centre, both political and official, must bear responsibility for this culture.”Read more at The Daily Beast.

Stench of 200 Decomposing Bodies Led Workers to Mariupol Basement
Alexander Ermochenko/ReutersAs workers sifted through what little was left of a bombed-out apartment block in the city of Mariupol, they were overcome by the unmistakable stench of decomposing bodies, by now all too common in war-torn parts of Ukraine. But Petro Adryushchenko, an attache in the mayor’s office, said they weren’t prepared for the discovery of 200 corpses of people of all ages in the basement of the collapsed building. It is unclear how many were killed when the building came down during the beginning of the three-month-old war, or if they died of starvation or from injuries as they tried to seek shelter. There were no survivors, he said. Just piles of bodies.“The city has turned into a continuous cemetery,” Adryushchenko wrote in an online post, adding that a makeshift morgue had been set up to process the recently discovered remains.Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? Will a Princeton Professor Be Fired for Pissing Off Campus Activists?
Photo Illustration by The Daily Beast/Getty Images/PrincetonPrinceton University’s Board of Trustees has voted to fire humanities professor Joshua Katz, revoking his tenure, ostensibly over charges related to a sexual misconduct investigation. But Katz’s defenders say he’s the latest victim of “cancel culture,” punished for criticizing anti-racist initiatives on campus in a July 2020 essay for the online magazine Quillette. The faculty member whose report led to the unusual move against the tenured professor says his conclusions were unrelated to Katz’s controversial statements. But is this simply spin? Or is there a legitimate case to be made that Katz is being hounded out of a job on trumped-up charges meant to punish him for wrongthink?Obviously, not every “cancel culture” claim is worthy, and some misconduct reckonings take years to materialize. But here, the case for “witch hunt” is pretty strong.Read more at The Daily Beast.
‘The Circle’ Winner Frank Grimsley Saw His Mother’s Spirit After the Finale
Courtesy of NetflixThe reality genre may have been built on the cliché “I’m not here to make friends,” but on The Circle, that’s pretty much the entire goal. Camila Cabello Keeps Getting Better and Better. Why Don’t People Take Her Seriously?
Photo Illustration by Elizabeth Brockway/The Daily Beast/GettyCamila Cabello, everyone’s favorite 19th-most-streamed artist in the world, released her third album last month. While I do think the record, Familia, is very good — as were its two predecessors, Romance and Camila — her third effort’s high quality is not what intrigues me the most. What I can’t get over is how, for the second time in as many albums, I didn’t even hear about Familia’s existence until it had been out for more than a month. It wasn’t until I was on Camila’s Spotify page to queue a song that I realized Familia was, and had been, out. Upon seeing this, I asked my girlfriend if she’d known about it. She’s not a Camila fan, but she does run a fairly large lifestyle and culture magazine and gets over a hundred pitches a day on myriad celebrity and music subjects. Her response: Nope. Not even a clue. This, to me, is baffling. We’re both music journalists and former artist managers. She’s a music publicist. I’m an independent artist and producer, and previously worked as an A&R Scout at a major label. We’re both very in touch with the industry and new music; missing a new album from a notable artist isn’t an issue we have often.Read more at The Daily Beast.
CPAC Hungary Was the GOP’s Ultimate Racist ‘Mask Off’ Moment
ATTILA KISBENEDEKThere was a time when I could write about the various shocking aspects of the most recent CPAC (Conservative Political Action Conference) event and it would shock and horrify. It would lead to massive protests and calls for change. But we aren’t that country anymore. For example, there’s the fact that little more than a week after a young man motivated by the “great replacement” conspiracy theory murdered 10 mostly Black people in cold blood, the Republican leaders and pundits at CPAC are now cementing their alliance with the leaders of a country, Hungary, which has made responding to “the great replacement” part of its guiding governmental principles.Once upon a time, a Jewish person like myself would have felt a deep dread in my bones over such a story, especially after learning that one of the speakers who shared the stage with the likes of Donald Trump and Tucker Carlson was a notorious antisemite and racist who called Jews “excrement,” called Roma people “animals,” and used the N-word to describe Black people.Read more at The Daily Beast.
Here’s How NASA Plans to Keep the Power on for a Future Moon Base
Photo Illustration by Kelly Caminero / The Daily Beast / Getty When NASA plans to return humans to the moon under the Artemis program, it will do so with an eye towards much longer habitation than the short jaunts of the Apollo missions. Artemis Base Camp, an outpost intended for the lunar south pole, will be designed to sustain human habitation on the moon, and operate as a metaphorical (and perhaps literal) launch pad to more distant cosmic destinations like Mars. In order to power that base, and manage energy flow between human habitation and other needs, NASA is partnering with Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque to design a resilient lunar microgrid. To understand what the microgrid will require on the moon, Sandia is developing a simulation that can model a variety of scenarios. But, to keep within the constraints of a lunar mission, the modeled lunar grid is focused on managing energy collected from solar panels, stored in batteries, and put to use across the outpost. In the simulation, “we have the ability to control how much energy consumption there is, how much a generation there is,” Rachid Darbali-Zamora, an electrical engineer at Sandia Labs, told The Daily Beast. While terrestrial microgrids can draw from a range of power sources, renewable and otherwise, working with just solar power for the planned lunar grids allows the focus to be on managing electricity generated one way, and building to the limits of the available power.Read more at The Daily Beast.

‘Funny Pages’ Is a Darkly Hilarious Comic Book Comedy from the Safdie Brothers’ Promising Protégé
A24The most that anybody knows about Owen Kline, whose debut movie as a director premiered in Cannes yesterday, is that he is the son of Kevin Kline and Phoebe Cates, and that he starred in Noah Baumbach’s The Squid and the Whale as a child—so it is fitting that Funny Pages features a character trying to break away from his parents’ influence, and contains a grimly hilarious masturbation scene. Kline’s film, an A24 joint produced by the Safdies, is assured and funny, an almost bewilderingly throwback indie film whose wit and lack of starriness are beguiling.Funny Pages—an appropriately flat title for this downbeat comedy of manners—is the story of a young man, Robert), who works in a comic book store and dreams of a career working as a cartoonist. Against the wish of his well-to-do parents that he go to college, Robert starts working as a clerk in a crummy legal office, rents a squalid shared apartment with two sweaty old bozos in a down-at-heel neighborhood, and focuses on his drawing. Over the course of his typist work, the teenager comes into contact with Wallace—essentially Comic Book Guy from The Simpsons—a weird and aggressive, possibly mentally impaired man who used to work as a colorist for a cult comic. The fitful, absurd relationship between the two, which doesn’t follow the course you might expect, forms the bulk of the movie. For his first film, Kline has chosen a stubbornly unusual course—not unlike his main character, who rejects the clear path that has been set for him. The characters here, filmed at pore-seizing distance by cinematographer Sean Price Williams on a grainy print, are so many misfits and outcasts: it feels remarkable for an American film in 2022 that nobody here is stunning, and several people are what would be considered ugly. The spirit of Robert Crumb looms large in this film where Kline takes great pleasure in his characters’ unruly hair, bulging eyes, big tits, and bad skin: one scene in which Robert sketches a loving cartoon of his lawyer as a thank you for her work, all flesh and frizzy hair, feels like a simulacrum of Kline’s process here. The characters outlined in this film also have an appropriately cartoonish quality, in the vein of American Splendor perhaps: these people are types, and consequently are afforded the right not to behave according to conventional psychology in Kline’s smart screenplay which is often riotously funny.Read more at The Daily Beast.

New Zealand PM Jacinda Ardern Talks ‘Pragmatic’ Gun Control With Colbert After Uvalde Shooting
CBSStephen Colbert delivered an emotional message during his Late Show monologue Tuesday night following an 18-year-old gunman’s mass shooting at the Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, claiming the lives of at least 19 schoolchildren and two adults.“Now, ladies and gentlemen, we taped this show earlier in the day, and I just want to let you know, shortly before I came out here tonight, we learned of the unspeakable shooting in Uvalde, Texas, today. And while we can add our prayers for the dead, there is nothing that can ever be said that can approach the immeasurable grief of those families.”He continued: “But while we’re at it, let’s pray this time our leaders show a modicum of courage in trying to prevent this from ever happening again. But prayers won’t end this. Voting might. So, when you vote, ask yourself this question: Who, running for office, has publicly stated that they are willing to do anything and everything in their power to protect your children from the criminally insane number of guns in America.” Read more at The Daily Beast.

Fox Guests Float ‘Man Traps,’ ‘Ballistic Blankets’ to Stop School Shootings
Photo Illustration by Thomas Levinson/The Daily Beast/Getty ImagesFox News on Tuesday night broadcast a number of suggestions for how to prevent mass shootings, hours after a gunman killed at least 19 elementary school children and two adults in Texas. These ideas included creating tax breaks for retired military and law enforcement personnel to patrol school property, installing “man traps,” and purchasing “ballistic blankets” for students.“Instead of parents buying their kids all these tools and toys and games, invest in the classroom to make it safer,” Maureen O’Connell, a former FBI agent, suggested to Bret Baier. Companies can conduct “threat assessments” for areas of vulnerability, she said, “and they have blankets that you can put up on the wall that are colorful and beautiful—but they’re ballistic blankets.”Similar comments were made on Hannity, where the namesake host first whined about President Joe Biden choosing to “politicize” the tragedy when he called for action from Republicans lobbied by the gun industry. Sean Hannity then turned to Dan Bongino, and said that “for years” he’s advocated for ways to keep students safe.Read more at The Daily Beast.

Depp, 58, is suing his ex-wife Heard for $50 million over a Washington Post op-ed she penned in December 2018 wherein she called herself “a public figure representing domestic abuse.” (She did not name Depp as her abuser in the piece.) The Pirates of the Caribbean star initially sued tabloid The Sun for libel in the U.K. for labeling him a “wife beater” but lost—with the judge concluding, “I have found that the great majority of alleged assaults of Ms. Heard by Mr. Depp have been proved to the civil standard.”So, Depp chose to go after Heard in Virginia court—and make the 36-year-old recount/relitigate the 14 incidents of assault she’d previously alleged against him—due to their weak anti-SLAPP law, which protects freedom of speech. The case has subsequently become comedy fodder for tasteless star-worshippers, as underinformed comics largely have sided with Depp and fallen hook, line, and sinker for his fans’ algorithmically-enhanced disinformation campaign. (Depp, who’s denied the abuse allegations, has also accused Heard of abuse—this despite having the benefits of size, power, and a full security detail at his disposal.)Read more at The Daily Beast.

Mo Brooks Barely Hangs On to Get to Runoff With Katie Britt in Alabama Senate Race
Photo Illustration by Luis G. Rendon/The Daily Beast/ReutersIt wasn’t the surprise victory he hoped for, but it wasn’t the embarrassing defeat he feared. In Alabama, Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL) narrowly landed himself in a runoff election with Republican Katie Britt, the former chief of staff for retiring Sen. Richard Shelby (R-AL).Although Britt strongly defeated Brooks and Army veteran Mike Durant, she was held just under the 50 percent threshold to avoid a runoff. And while she looked like she would ultimately defeat Brooks by about 20 points, the race is far from over.Read more at The Daily Beast.

The ‘This Is Us’ Series Finale Made Us Weep the Perfect Amount
NBCEarly in the This Is Us finale, all-time great emoter Randall Pearson (Sterling K. Brown) effectively sums up my mood about writing this farewell to the NBC drama: “I’m okay. I’m appropriately sad, and I’m appropriately anxious about this eulogy.”Last week, the extended Pearson clan said goodbye to matriarch Rebecca (Mandy Moore) in an episode that made me cry so much it gave me a headache. This sounds like a terrible experience, and at times, Dan Fogelman’s series has leaned into the misery—think dragging out the mystery of Jack’s death, for example. Headache aside, “The Train” is a beautiful penultimate outing that spotlights Moore’s terrific performance and Fogelman’s ability to weave an unexpected narrative into the familiar Pearson tapestry.“Us” is far more understated in comparison, combining two elements the series excels at portraying: the mundane and the meaningful. In the final “previously on,” the inclusion of Rebecca telling Miguel (Jon Huertas) that she’s not ready to let go of memories from days “when nothing big really happens” is a neon sign pointing to the Pearson family’s “completely free Saturday” that intercuts with the day of Rebecca’s funeral.Read more at The Daily Beast.
Fox News Guest: People Calling for Change Post-Shooting Are ‘Hurting the Situation’
Fox NewsFox News guest Buck Sexton said Tuesday on Tucker Carlson Tonight that those who criticize politicians who can but won’t enact legislation to help prevent mass shootings like the one at a Texas elementary school earlier in the day are “hurting the situation.”Host Tucker Carlson hypothesized that mental illness could have played a part in the shooting. Many on the left, he claimed, “don’t seem that interested in the fact that there are an awful lot of tragically, sometimes dangerously mentally ill people wandering around all of a sudden.” He then asked, “Am I the only one to notice this?”Sexton said a discussion about mental illness “would be a helpful conversation for the country to have, and obviously in this moment of real tragedy, there is a need for unity and healing in the country as much as we can to try to achieve something in the aftermath of evil like this.”Read more at The Daily Beast.
Texas Parents’ Frantic Search for Their Kids: ‘Help Me Find My Baby’

At least fourteen families with children at Robb Elementary School waited at Uvalde’s civic center on Tuesday afternoon for authorities to give them an update on their missing children and feared the worst.Nikki Jackson was waiting for an update on her nephew, fourth-grader Uziyah Garcia. She told The Daily Beast that cops weren’t telling families much; they were forced to read updates on the news. Earlier that day, Jackson posted on Facebook: “We are being told some kids ran from school into the houses in the neighborhood. Another massacre…” Biden said, pausing to compose himself. “Another elementary school.”In a primetime address from the Roosevelt Room of the White House, Biden appeared visibly shaken by the death of 18 students and three adults at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas on Tuesday, according to Texas state Sen. Roland Gutierrez, only ten days after another gunman’s attack on a grocery store in Buffalo. Biden, whose political career has been marked by moments of deep parental grief, began his remarks with an exhausted sigh, a sigh that punctuated his remarks multiple times as he described “the hollowness in your chest” at the loss of a child.Read more at The Daily Beast.

Brian Kemp easily defeated Perdue in the Republican gubernatorial primary, with such a commanding lead that the Associated Press called the race by 8:30 p.m.That resounding victory means Kemp will head into his November rematch against Democrat Stacey Abrams without having to endure even a runoff contest against Perdue. That result is likely to be the biggest black mark on Trump’s endorsement record in this 2022 election season, which he is using to try and demonstrate his hold over the GOP.Read more at The Daily Beast.

Who's in the firing line after partygate report?

‘Moonage Daydream,’ a Trippy Tribute to David Bowie, Raises Many Questions at Cannes
NeonWhen I saw David Bowie in concert, twenty-odd years ago, he began performing “Space Oddity” halfway through the gig, after a big pause. “Ground Control to Major Tom” rang out, without any backing track, through the concert hall, and the crowd went wild. “Ground Control to Major Tom,” Bowie intoned once more, and then broke off, laughing. He had no intention of playing the song—and never did, for the rest of the night. Some of that piss-taking, playful humor is evident in Brett Morgen’s Moonage Daydream, a documentary about Bowie made with the consent of his estate, which eschews traditional talking-heads-and-archive forms in favor of bold, allusive montage that seeks to convey an idea of Bowie rather than portray him accurately. Perhaps not quite enough of his slippery wit and irony is on display, however: Morgen’s viewpoint is one of rather sincere fandom. If you’re already fascinated by Bowie you will be fascinated by this film; if you aren’t (something which Morgen’s documentary doesn’t even seem to deem possible) you may find yourself tiring, finally, of the heart-eyes with which Moonage Daydream regards its subject.Early on, Moonage Daydream stands out for its fresh outlook, presenting pristine live footage and gorgeously crisp clips of Bowie performances in conjunction with a phalanx of imagery, drawing on astronomy, cinema, docu-footage, and miscellaneous styles of animation in order to evoke the feel of Bowie’s music, and pin down even for a nano-second some of the evanescent mystery of his star persona. Morgen’s ebullient use of color is repeatedly evident in fleeting splashes of what could be fireworks, or splodges of paint, or living organisms through a lens, mutating and disappearing. There are segments of Bowie clips figuring a lunar eclipse; snatches of The Wizard of Oz, Top Hat and A Trip to the Moon; glimpses of Jackson Pollock and Basquiat; scenes of war, of troops parading; all of these things flirting and dancing with lesser-known or famous clips from Bowie’s back catalog, such as the famous news segment featuring a teenage girl crying because she missed meeting the singer, or Bowie mock-fellating his guitarist’s instrument. This pell-mell tumbling of influences and images conveys something heady and immersive, which has a similar effect to Todd Haynes’s take on Bob Dylan: namely, instead of trying to paint Bowie properly, the film is happy to refract and splinter him, drawing power from alluding rather than showing.Read more at The Daily Beast.

Monkeypox Medicine Is Here—but There’s a Catch
Teguh Supriyanto / GettyMore than 50 cases of monkeypox, a rare infectious disease that causes flu-like symptoms and body rashes and lesions, have been reported in at least 16 countries since May 13, according to the World Health Organization. The U.S. had its first case confirmed last week in Massachusetts followed by six probable cases in New York, Florida, Utah, and Washington State. At the time of this reporting, there’s also a suspected case in California. The unprecedented spread of this disease might seem grim, but that doesn’t mean we’re unprepared. In a paper published Tuesday in The Lancet Infectious Diseases journal, researchers in the U.K. believe we may have an antiviral silver bullet originally developed to fight smallpox, a cousin to monkeypox. The paper also underscores what scientists know about how this infection jumps from person to person, highlighting growing evidence that it’s sexually transmitted.“The paper is reassuring,” Dr. Brian Garibaldi, medical director for the Johns Hopkins’ Biocontainment Unit who wasn’t involved in the study, told The Daily Beast. “We do have some experience providing care for patients who’ve been infected with monkeypox outside of traditional, endemic areas. And it highlights the fact there’s still a lot we need to learn about how to use therapies designed for smallpox to treat other [smallpox-related] viruses.”Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? Tula’s Mineral Magic Is the Only Sunscreen I’ll Wear on My Face—Here’s Why
Scouted/The Daily Beast/Tula.If there ever was any advice I could offer my younger self, it would be to wear sunscreen and to wear it vigorously, especially on my face. Though I mostly avoided tanning beds and traumatic sunburns in my youth, I neglected to include sunscreen as part of my daily beauty routine for a long time, and my fair skin has suffered all the more for it.For a long time, I avoided wearing sunscreen on my face unless it was absolutely necessary because I was worried the protective lotion would clog my pores, cause my skin to break out, leave my skin feeling super greasy, and not blend well with my makeup. And to be honest, the sunscreen products that were available even just a decade ago were nowhere near as effective, light, non-greasy, and skin-friendly as today’s products are. Lucky for me, I’ve now clued into the benefits and necessities of including a broad-spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen in my daily skincare routine, and my face has never been more grateful for the extra layer of protection from the damaging effects of the sun. Most recently, I discovered and quickly fell in love with Tula’s Mineral Magic Sunscreen—simply put: a must-have, must-use product I wear on my face every single day. Unlike cakey, super-scented, name-brand sunscreens, Tula’s Mineral Magic is super light, non-greasy, and applies as seamlessly and silky as a base for foundation. In fact, it absorbs so quickly and easily, that it feels like I didn’t even apply sunscreen at all, which is my favorite thing about this product: it disappears into your skin while working its protective magic.Read more at The Daily Beast.

‘Russian Doll’ Creator’s Twisted Take on Star Wars Could Finally Shake Up the Series
Lucasfilm/Walt Disney StudiosThe creator of Russian Doll is heading into the expanded Star Wars universe on Disney+, but she’s not ready to become a Jedi Master quite yet. Leslye Headland shared a bit about her upcoming show The Acolyte with Vanity Fair in a new interview, teasing what’s next for our beloved galaxy far, far away.Though most of the plot, casting, and other details have been left under wraps, the most fascinating aspect of The Acolyte by far is that, for once, our protagonist won’t be on the Light Side. We’re heading over to the Dark Side this time. As the power on the Light Side continues to proliferate, Headland said her goal was to unpack how the Jedi were unable to notice any of the sneaky grifters in the Dark Side taking control.”Well, how did things get to this point?” Headland asks. “How did we get to where a Sith lord can infiltrate the Senate and none of the Jedi pick up on it? What went wrong? What are the scenarios that led us to this moment?”Read more at The Daily Beast.

This Bot Can Accurately Predict Your Race Using an X-Ray. Scientists Have No Idea How It Works.
Virojt ChangyenchamArtificial intelligence has a racism problem. Look no further than the bots that go on racist rants, or the facial recognition tech that refuses to see Black people, or discriminatory HR bots that won’t hire people of color. It’s a pernicious issue plaguing the world of neural networks and machine learning that not only strengthens existing biases and racist thinking, but also worsens the effects of racist behavior towards communities of color everywhere. And when it’s coupled with the existing racism in the medical world, it can be a recipe for disaster. That’s what’s so concerning about a new study published in The Lancet last week by a team of researchers from MIT and Harvard Medical School, which created an AI that could accurately identify a patient’s self-reported race based on medical images like X-rays alone. Photo by JIM WATSON/POOL/AFP via Getty ImagesAfter Amber Heard’s defense team rested their case on Tuesday, Johnny Depp’s lawyers opened the last round of testimony in the sprawling defamation trial between the former couple with a rebuttal of the argument that the actor’s former attorney and Twitter trolls sabotaged Heard’s acting career.A movie executive who worked with Heard on the hit superhero film Aquaman, as well as expert witnesses for Depp, took aim at Heard’s own final witness from Monday: a movie industry consultant named Kathryn Arnold. Arnold had estimated Heard’s probable losses at $45-$50 million over five years starting around 2018 based on her career trajectory before her conflicts with Depp metastasized in court and online.First up was Walter Hamada, president of DC Films, the movie wing of the superhero comics imprint behind the $1 billion-grossing Aquaman, which featured Heard opposite Jason Momoa in the title role. Testifying in a pre-recorded video, Hamada reiterated the Depp team’s argument that screen chemistry with Momoa, not negative publicity surrounding her breakup, was responsible for Heard’s reduced presence in the Aquaman sequel due in March of 2023.Read more at The Daily Beast.
