NORAD (The North American Aerospace Defense Command) reports detecting 4 Russian military planes near Alaska this week, the latest incident in an escalating battle.
The maneuvering comes less than two weeks after U.S. Army soldiers were deployed to the region of Alaska as part of a “force protection operation“ aimed at monitoring and possibly deterring such activity. The Pentagon described the soldiers as “ready, lethal force.” The division is known as “The Arctic Angels“ and are regularly stationed at other bases.
The Russian military planes remained in international airspace in what is called “Alaska’s Air Defense Identification Zone“ (a sort of demilitarized zone, if you will) and did not enter American or Canadian sovereign airspace, NORAD released in its statement. However, Russian aircraft have now been spotted flying near Alaskan airspace 7 times this month.
As a surprise to no one, the Biden-Harris administration has issued no comment on the latest incident.
